In most industries it can be hard to attract and keep good workers, so you have to set your business apart from the rest.

Give people reasons to want to work for you – and to stay working for you, even when other opportunities pop up.

Here are some of our top tips for keeping employees happy.

  1. Communicate clearly – whether it’s knowing what shift they’re on or how you like to do a stocktake, staff will appreciate clear communication. They’ll also prefer hearing it from you, rather than through Mary, who told Marie, who told Maureen, who told everyone else (like she always does).

  2. Be organised – send out your rosters in advance and be quick to advise of any changes, so your employees can plan their lives. It’s not a nice feeling when you think you’re going Pokemon hunting on Friday night, only to realise you’ll be on the late shift.

  3. Praise your staff – if they’ve handled a tricky customer really well, stayed behind to help close the shop or made a big sale, then tell them they’ve done a good job. A little praise goes a long way.

  4. Uniforms or dress code – Starbucks has been in the news recently because of its new employee dress code, which gives its workers more flexibility with what they wear under their apron. A relaxed dress code will give people a chance to reflect their personalities, while nice uniforms will encourage a sense of pride.

  5. Be social – you don’t always need to spend a lot of time and money on team building activities. Sometimes it’s the simple things that work better, like mingling at work drinks rather than just shouting everyone a beer and disappearing back to your desk.
