Why you should care about preparation

All of us have had to deal with the concept of ‘preparation’ from the moment we could walk. Whilst the responsibility we had back then was comparatively small relative to todays age, they were still things that in a young child’s mind were rather significant. Things such as making our beds, turning the lights off, hanging up our clothes, helping out with the dishes. These were all primary responsibilities when we were younger.

This turned into getting ready for school on time, attending all of our classes, getting our first jobs and then moving out of the family home. We continue to mindlessly prepare ourselves for these tasks every day – but to us they seem so insignificant compared to running a business, making a good wage, putting a roof over our heads and feeding our families.

Irrespective of the size of the task; the principle remains the same. Better preparation makes for better execution of the task. To ‘prepare’ is typically defined as ‘”make (someone) ready or able to do or deal with something.”

To ready yourself.

To make sure you’re able and ready to deal with something.

I think it’s pretty safe to say that many of us at some time in our lives have felt unprepared for something. However, there are a handful of people that perform really well when they are unprepared. These people work well under pressure. But for the majority of us, that just isn’t the case.

We need to be prepared for anything that may come our way so that whatever happens, our business and our resources are safe. If you prepare for the worst, whatever comes your way will be a walk in the park for you. Because let’s be honest , hiccups and hurdles along the way slow down our business. We lose our momentum, our money, and our intensity within the market.

Ensure you make plans for whatever situation may be thrown at you. Because that’s what makes for a successful business. One that can handle whatever may be thrown at them.

How To Re Engage Yourself For 2015

We’re already a week into the New Year. If you’re like me you’ll be back at work already, thinking to yourself, “how on earth did this past year go so fast?”

It seems like only yesterday we were at the beginning of 2014 mapping out our goals for the upcoming year. Whilst this time is perfect for realigning your goals and targets there are a number of other factors that hold significant importance if we wish to keep up a steady pace of momentum for the duration of the year.

For many businesses and individuals, the Christmas/New Year break often isn’t a long enough period to recharge their batteries, so January is a really great month whilst everyone around us is attempting to get back into the swing of things to take your time in establishing “why you are doing what you’re doing.” At the risk of sounding like a broken record – our mantra at goRoster is to make sure “you love what you do”. The beginning of a year is the perfect time to remind yourselves why – and to get yourself back into your groove at work.

Here are some tips on how to re engage yourself for 2015

  • Get a good start to the day – If you’re like me you do your best work in the morning. Often our bodies and brains decide to switch off late afternoon – however this may not be the vase for everyone. Decide on your peak periods throughout the day and smash our your best work during those times.
  • Take breaks – Get up and get moving throughout the day. Even if it’s just walking outside and up and down the stairs a few times. Fresh air and natural light does your brain the world of good!
  • Surround yourself with activity – Whilst some prefer to work alone, often surrounding yourselves with other workers can boost productivity and motivation. You’re all working towards a common goal so why not do it together. Get inspired.
  • Think habits, not motivation – This point is pretty central to the topic of this blog. You want this journey to be long term – not just for the first few month of the year. By creating habits for yourself rather than just enjoying short spurts – you’re more likely to maintain a solid level of output for the whole year.
  • Limit your to-do list – Creating good-looking lists that cover an entire page can be overwhelming. Try breaking bigger tasks up into smaller ones. A greater sense of achievement can be felt and often creates a desire to push through the rest of your tasks. Bigger tasks take longer – and no one likes crossing off only one or two tasks a day!
  • No pain, no gain – This point is self-explanatory. It’s not meant to be easy – but you’ll get there.
  • Know your end goal – Create that shining light at the end of the tunnel. Keep this focal point central to all your work.
  • Get more help – Don’t be afraid to ask for help from those around you. In today’s society we are exposed to such an overload on information, it’s just a matter or wading your way through it and picking out what’s relevant to you. Talk to those around you and get online. Help is essentially only the click of a button away!
  • Keep learning – Always keep learning. No one is ever perfect and there is always room to improve. Keep your eyes and ears open and listen to other people in your field.

6 Hurdles Hospitality Managers Commonly Face (And How To Overcome Them) – Part Three

Hospitality managers must be able to wear all hats in this business.


In Part Two we discussed customer loyalty and how it can enable you to gain a competitive advantage in your industry if you are executing the right activities. A lot of the initiative required to build customer loyalty comes from the managers themselves. They undertake a number of various tasks, from meeting with suppliers, putting together new menus, ordering stock, monitoring wage costs, and the list goes on! More importantly, they also have to be the face of the business.

The person in charge sets the tone for establishment, and customers have the ability to pick up on this instantly. When you are in a restaurant and you get swift, efficient and happy service by an employee, it’s usually because they are being led by someone who takes charge and takes responsibility in ensuring all areas of the business know exactly what they are doing for the entirety of the shift.

Alternatively, when you have a bad experience, or staff seem flustered and rushed off their feet, it’s usually a sign of a lack in leadership. It definitely takes a certain personality to play the role of a hospitality manager. They must be calm, quick on their feet, and as impossible as it often seems – be in several different places at once. All with a big smile on their face!

These people are incredibly passionate about what they do; they live and breathe every aspect of hospitality. That’s what makes them so wonderful. We have all have instances where we start to doubt our own professions, and we wonder if we are in fact doing what we really love. A hospitality manager must be multi-faceted, and able to wear all hats in this industry!

Solution: As a hospitality manager, make sure you know your employees. What motivates them? What keeps them happy? What makes them work hard? Use these different ways to bring out the best in each of your employees. Appeal to their potential. However, do be careful not to fall into a common trap and distort the line between being a leader, and a friend.

When this happens, it makes it very hard to come back from, especially with respect to discipline and setting rules. Try and remain a managerial figure that you would want to work for. People work hard for those they admire. This will make the job of managing staff a lot easier for you.
